The Black Saturday fires saw an overwhelming response from the community.
One organisation that provided both immediate and ongoing support, has now been recognised for its efforts.
"It's really important that we acknowledge all of those that have been involved with the fires, not only those that did such a great job quelling the fire, but those that came to the assistance of the community and everybody affected," Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said.
Loddon Mallee Housing Services had no formal role but took on enormous responsibilities.
"We just put teams of people together, they were at the recovery centre, with council's permission of course, at the moment they opened," Loddon Mallee Housing Services CEO Ken Marchingo said.
The organisation was able to offer financial aid and access to housing.
"A lot of people made houses, caravans, all sort of things available, so we were able to work through those things and broker those people into various responses," Mr Marchingo said.
As a homelessness support service, its staff were able to draw on their case management skills.
"Almost 70 per cent of our operational staff are actually one-on-one support workers, social workers, counsellors, working with people with a wide range of issues, so we actually had a well-trained work force to draw from to form these outreach teams," Mr Marchingo said.
Loddon Mallee Housing has released a record of its experiences and learnings.
While in an "internal" document, Mr Marchingo says it could assist other organisations and future response efforts.
