Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian at Bundaberg this morning.
The twenty five year old man was crossing Scotland Street just before ten-am when he was hit by a delivery van.
Another person who will never make it home this Christmas.
The Queensland Ambulance Service’s Warren Smith said, “I believe that the driver did attempt to break but the patient received the full impact of the vehicle.”
Witness Robert Benham said, “Could be a father or anything, you know Christmas time, no-one wants to hear this.”
Travelling along Scotland Street at 9.40 this morning, a road runner delivery van struck the man as he crossed the street.
Racing from a nearby home, Robert Benham found the twenty-five year old pinned beneath the vehicle.
“Held his hand until the medics came and the police and then I just prayed for him,” he said.
Mr Warren said the twenty-five year old had “head, chest and pelvic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Police believe the young man may have been speaking on his mobile phone when he stepped out in front of traffic without looking.
A man walking just a few paces in front was in a state of shock.
He said he didn't hear the van coming.
Police said there's no reason to believe speed was a factor.
Inspector Kev Guteridge said, “Fifty ks is more than enough.”
Police are anxious to speak to anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the incident or shortly beforehand.
The forensic crash unit is investigating the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
