Peter Byrne is one of regional Queensland’s best known weathermen with over 37 years experience with the Meteorological Bureau.
Born and bred in Mackay, Peter has worked in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands as well as most regional centres in Queensland, among them Cairns, Mackay, Cloncurry, Brisbane, 9 years in Townsville followed by a stint in Mount Isa. After many years moving around the state with the Bureau, he finally settled in Rockhampton in 1986.
Peter joined WIN NEWS in February 1990 as WIN Television’s weather presenter and has since gained a tremendous following across Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Wide Bay and Toowoomba where he presents the weather each weeknight on WIN.
His ability to translate complex weather systems into language viewers can understand has won him great respect in the community. Peter will study each of the markets for which he is presenting weather for and build his knowledge on each of the local communities. Up until Peter’s retirement from the Bureau of Meteorology in July 2001, he had the added advantage of walking straight from an operational meteorological environment on to the news set, which allowed him to provide viewers with the most up to the minute meteorological information.
Coupled with his dry wit and unique style, Peter continues to not only provide accurate weather information but entertain viewers at the same time. During breaks in the news, Peter is known to entertain the floor crew with his collection of bird and animal calls which he’s quite adept at.
Up until his retirement, Peter layed claim to being only one of a few Bureau of Meteorology staff members presenting weather on Australian television.
Peter is married and enjoys the Capricorn Coast life. He has a married daughter, Nichola, who is a school teacher. Peter enjoys fishing, golf and gardening and most importantly spending time with his two grandchildren.
