KING TIDES
Monday 1, Feb 2010

Three point four metre tides... strong gusts ... and heavy rain...

Left Cairns is chaos at the weekend.

“If you have a look, a lot of sand that's been pushed up along the walking tracks of the Esplanade and through that area all associated with the king tides. It's just unfortunate that we had the strong winds at the same time.”

Further south also felt the brunt, Townsville hit with strong winds ... more than two hundred millimetres of rain ... and power outages.

While Mackay saw power lines downed and boats destroyed.

Luckily, Cairns had minimal damage.

“They had seven reports for sand bagging efforts, we had a tree down in Kuranda, one in Mareeba, one at Redlynch and one at Holloways Beach.”

Northern beaches saw erosion from the strong tides.

Twenty centimetres of sand covered the footpath at Holloways Beach.

Council were quick to clear the mess.

“I guess the fortunate thing is that we knew the high tides were coming. The king tides we expect around this time of year”

The Barron river was gushing wildly ... but that didn't stop fisherman wanting to catch a bite to eat.

Flooding of the highway south of the region leaving stocks low at local supermarkets.

“The train wasn't ... didn't arrive due to the flooding from Mackay and Townsville, but everything was off-loaded onto trucks and delivered yesterday”

Overall, Cairns received one hundred and fifty millimetres of rain.

“Just over forty eight hours later, the same area is bone dry. The bureau says the next king tide isn't expected for another fortnight, but will be even bigger.”
