Late on Thursday, L-E Giles and Sons became the latest slaughterhouse to come undone, accused of what PrimeSafe says was the "appalling" treatment of pigs.

The abattoir's twenty (20) workers now face unemployment.

But not everyone agrees with the hard-line action.

"Do you shut the business? Or do you suspend the employee. Well, what good does it do to shut the business down?" pig farmer Michael Cowan said.

Michael and Bronwyn Cowan rely on Giles as part of their business farming rare breed pigs at Darnum.

"She's the victim of the fallout, yeah," he said.

Their closest alternative abattoirs are now Sale and Laverton.

But they face the very real prospect, they'll simply have to put down their three hundred (300) animals.

"You have to get them killed in a proper facility, humanely, if you can't do that cost-effectively, then your business can't survive."

It's a similar case for South Gippsland farmer Graham Edyvane, who relies on Giles for transport.

"We've never had any qualms about taking animals, having our animals processed there," he said.

The Giles Abattoir went to ground today, saying it couldn't comment while an investigation was pending; that's expected to take the DPI some time. In any case, it's unlikely the business will reopen, with PrimeSafe sounding its intention to cancel the license for good. Tom Kelly, WIN News.
