STORM DAMAGE
Monday 8, Mar 2010

The State Emergency Service expects to continue working well into tomorrow, responding to calls from residents affected by yesterday's storms.

The storms uprooted trees and caused flash flooding throughout the Goulburn Valley, the worst hit area, Shepparton.

It was labour of another kind which characterised the final hours of this long weekend.

A storm "supercell" hit the Goulburn Valley just before five yesterday afternoon, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

"Just amazing, never seen anything like it," Shepparton resident Lois Gleeson said.

Streets became rivers, the velodrome; a swimming pool.

Traffic lights failed, boom gates broke and trees were uprooted.

Some narrowly escaped the danger.

"I was just sitting on the couch in here and I got quite scared. The tree was falling so I got out of the way then all of a sudden there was just this huge crash and glass everywhere," Lily Hunt said.

Since Friday afternoon the State Emergency Service has received more than 500 calls for help in the Goulburn Valley.

224 of those came between 7 and 8 o'clock last night.

"We're currently working through the volume of calls. We've got outstanding approximately 200 at this stage. We've also got significant crews from outside the region also supporting inside the region," SES Acting Manager John Parker said.

Residents are calling it the worst storm in living memory.

But compared to the cycling club, or at least what's left of it, it seems many escaped lightly.

Wind gusts were so fierce, the club's roof was torn off, parts of it landed more than fifty metres away.

The club is vowing to rebuild.

"You walk into a place you think is going to be there forever and half of it is not there, you think what's happened?" said Shepparton Cycling Club President Gary Dowdell.

Powercor is attempting to restore electricity to around 40 homes, including on Raftery Road, but the authority concedes some may be without supply for another 24 hours.
