Questions Over Commissioner
Saturday 7, Nov 2009

Tasmania's opposition parties have accused the Premier of misleading Parliament over last year's botched appointment of Richard McCreadie as Acting Police Commissioner...

Now they're calling on Mr Bartlett to give a full account of what took place.

The Premier announced Richard McCreadie's appointment on October 16 last year.

Four days later he reversed that decision claiming new information had come to light.

Acting Police Commissioner Darren Hine yesterday told a select committee that he had warned Mr Bartlett of possible criminal charges against Mr McCreadie prior to the announcement.

But the Premier told parliament that he was only made aware of the situation after Mr McCreadie's appointment.

Opposition Leader, Will Hodgman said "On a number of occasions he batted the issue away, he has in my view, misled the parliament and he should explain to Tasmanians whether or not he has."

The timing of this latest government fiasco not lost on Mr Bartlett's political foes.

Mr Hodgman said "In the very week we're debating establishing an integrity commission here in Tasmania, David Bartlett's own integrity is called into question."

The Greens vowing to pursue the matter further at the next sitting of the house in two weeks time.

Greens Leader, Nick McKim said "The one thing we can all say about this is Mr Bartlett has some very serious explaining to do and thank goodness there's a week of question time left before parliament rises."

Mr Bartlett wasn't talking today - and it seems his party colleagues weren't keen to discuss the issue either.

Labor MP Lisa Sing said "That affair is before a parliamentary inquiry and I'm not going to comment about something that's before a parliamentary inquiry."

The government also refusing to discuss what impact the saga may have on its re-election chances at the state polls in March.
