Dr Jennifer Smiley is a General Practitioner based in Wollongong, NSW who combines her passion for medicine with professionalism, business acumen and a spirit of entrepreneurship.
She has developed an innovative new model of General Practice for the benefit of doctors, patients and allied health professionals and has brought this model to fruition through the establishment of the highly successful Illawarra Family Medical Centre.
The Centre has brought together four GP businesses under one roof, along with range of allied health facilities, reducing the administrative burden on GPs while providing more convenience for patients and improved diagnosis and treatment of complex health problems.
Dr Smiley is passionate about the promotion of general practice, particularly in regional and rural areas and sees her business model as a tangible way of attracting people into the profession, for the benefit of the broader Australian community.
As Chairperson of the Wollongong Medical Service, the region’s after hours medical provider, Dr Smiley has implemented modern business practices, a higher quality of patient care and shorter response times. She has brought a new level of professionalism to the Service and has completely turned around its financial performance.
Dr Smiley is a leader in the area of women’s health; resources she has developed in the areas of breast and cervical screening have been used by GPs across the country.
She is an active member of the Illawarra Division of General Practice and has held leadership positions in working groups on cervical screening, diabetes and immunisation.
She contributes to the community through her work with the Illawarra Breast Cancer Support Group and Diabetes Support Group and gives public lectures on hormone replacement therapy, menopause and diabetes.
Dr Smiley’s outstanding achievements have been recognised by her peers through her receipt of a number of awards, including being named Telstra Businesswoman of the Year 2006 (Private and Corporate Sector), Zonta Illawarra Businesswomen of the Year (2005-06) and receiving the Award for Clinical Leadership from the Illawarra Division of General Practice.
