Break in the Weather Allows for Cleanup to Begin
Tuesday 2, Feb 2010

Council workers cleaning up the mess today after what was a wild forty eight hours.

Yesterday king tides and fierce winds created a recipe for disaster.

Large waves battering the coastline, stripping sand from beaches.

Man-made walls along Hervey Bay's esplanade barely shielded

homes and businesses.

Conservationists say it's an example of why development should be banned in low lying areas.

"This basically comes down to town planning. The council needs to open their eyes up very very wide." says Emma-Kate Currie from the Wide Bay Burnett Conservation Council.

Fraser Coast Mayor Mick Kruger says council is seeking State Government approval to

further protect our coastline.

"We got through this one ok because there wasn't too much wind around, if we had a strong northerly it might have been a different proposition." says Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor Mick Kruger.

But the problem isn't confined to the Fraser Coast.

Today conservationists in Bundaberg were assessing their beaches, after a similar hammering.

"Yesterday morning with the large tide and wind behind it was when we suffered the most damage. So we lost a good couple of metres of dunes from along Mon Repos beach, as well as other beaches along the Woongara coast." says Cathy Gatly, Ranger at Mon Repos beach.

The radar looked less threatening today.but severe weather warnings remained in place for most of the area.

The State Emergency Service staying on high alert.

"Main things we've been dealing with is just water entry into homes through leaking roofs, some blocked gutters and little bit of run-off water, that's been mostly it." says Bill Daniels from Bundaberg SES.

With the monsoon trough moving north tonight, we should see an easing of the winds and flooding, but don't expect an end to the wet weather any time soon.

"I would expect we'll see showers along the coast for most of the week and into the weekend yes." says Mike Marrinan from the Bureau of Meteorology.
