What is this new channel called “Sky News on WIN”?
The Australian News Channel and the WIN Network have come together to broadcast Sky News content across WIN’s regional free-to-air television network on a dedicated channel. This new channel will run 24/7 airing selected Sky News, Fox Sports and Sky Weather content spanning news, sport, weather and public affairs programming.
When does it start and how can I watch it?
Sky News on WIN will commence broadcasting at 6am on Sunday the 2nd of September. It will be broadcast either on Channel 53 in northern NSW or Channel 83 in all other WIN TV broadcast markets.
Additionally, as with all new free-to-air channels, “Sky News on WIN” will be broadcast using the Mpeg 4 transmission format.
What is Mpeg 4?
Digital television broadcasting originally began in the older Mpeg 2 transmission format, but with technology improvements, an improved transmission format called Mpeg 4 was introduced. All TV broadcasters have embraced this new format by adding many new channels in Mpeg 4 (eg: All High Definition channels, 9Life, 7flix, the Racing Channel, Gold, TVSN and many more).
How will watching “Sky News on WIN” in Mpeg 4 affect me?
This depends on the age of your TV or receiving device. Television manufacturers began including Mpeg 4 capability in their TV’s about 6 to 7 years ago. The best way to check is to select Channel 83 (or 53 in nthn NSW). If you see pictures and audio, your TV or receiving device is Mpeg 4 compatible. However, some viewers with older non-compatible Mpeg 4 TV receivers or devices may only see black on their TV screen, or words on the screen saying “This service is Scrambled” or “No Signal”.
I can’t view “Sky News on WIN”, what should I do?
You will need to purchase either a new TV or receiving device that is compatible with Mpeg 4. The cheapest choice is to purchase a new Mpeg 4 compatible STB (Set Top Box) which are priced around the $50 to $75 price range. The STB will then need to be connected to your current TV via a cable, preferably via the HDMI input.
Remember, that as well as now receiving “Sky News on WIN”, you will now also benefit from being able to view the many other new Mpeg 4 channels as mentioned above.
