Commercial broadcasters in Regional WA Broadcast Technology Improvement

Over the coming month, the WIN Network (Nine), Seven and Ten in Regional Western Australia will be transitioning its remaining Mpeg2 delivered channels to Mpeg 4. The reason we are doing this is to complete the move to newer technology allowing us to improve picture quality and give us more flexibility in how we deliver Free To Air programming to regional Australia.

Nine channels (9HD 80, Life 83, TVSN 84 ) are already delivered in the newer technology (mpeg4). If you already receive these channels, then you should have no problem throughout this transition.

Televisions bought in the last 10 years should have no problem with this technology and the transition should go unnoticed.

If you have a television that is older than 10 years you would have noticed that Channels (Channel 80, 83,84) have not been available to you, so unfortunately this will mean at some stage over the coming months Ten and Seven channels will also disappear.

To get access to all channels you will need to purchase a television that is less than 10 years old, we note that there are a couple of models out there that are 8-10 years old that also cannot receive the new format, but we believe they are rare. If you do not wish to purchase a new tv, you can purchase a set top box from your local electrical appliance store for $50-$100.

All commercial channels on Nine, Seven, and Ten that are in the old format (mpeg2) will move to the new format from late March 2024.

The WIN Network is not alone in transitioning to the new format. You will have noticed other free to air broadcasters also have channels in the new format and will also be moving more channels to the new format.

Note:

All East Coast states have transitioned to mpeg 4 formats already.

Trouble Shooting

I receive no signal or “audio only” on ch 80,83,84.

Unfortunately, your TV is not modern enough to receive the mpeg4 signal and you will need to purchase a new tv or set top box.

I was receiving all channels but now I don’t receive any.

Your TV may have lost its Tuning, so you should try doing a rescan.

How much is a Set top Box.

They can retail at $50 - $100 at your local appliance store (ask for a “digital set top box” for my old TV).

I receive my signal through a VAST set top box will I have problems?

No! your VAST Box should have no problems.

Why can’t you just leave it how it has always been. Why do you need to change?

Technology has moved on just as your tv went from Black and White to colour or 4:3 to 16:9 we need to keep up with the technology so we can continue to give you access to the best quality at no cost other than your initial purchase. We have been delivering the new format for nearly 10 years so it is time to make the full transition.
