WIN Network Technology Improvement

Over the coming months, the WIN Network TEN signal in Northern NSW will be transitioning its remaining Mpeg2 delivered channels to Mpeg 4. The reason we are doing this is to complete the move to newer technology allowing us to improve picture quality and give us more flexibility in how we deliver Free To Air programming to regional Australia.

10HD (Channel 50) and Sky News Regional (Channel 53) are already delivered in the newer technology (mpeg4). If you already receive these channels, then you should have no problem throughout this transition.

Televisions bought in the last 10 years should have no problem with this technology and the transition should go unnoticed.

If you have a television that is older than 10 years you would have noticed that 10HD (Ch50), Sky News Regional (Ch53) have not been available to you, so unfortunately this will mean at some stage over the coming months 10 Peach and 10 Bold will also disappear.

To get access to all WIN 10 channels you will need to purchase a television that is less than 10 years old, we note that there are a couple of models out there that are 8-10 years old that also cannot receive the new format but we believe they are rare. If you do not wish to purchase a new tv, you can purchase a set top box from your local electrical appliance store for $50-$100.

Currently Peach (Ch51) and Bold (Ch52) are in the old format (mpeg2) and will move to the new format in November.

Currently Channel 5 which is transmitting lower quality 10 in Standard Definition will remain in the old format for another few months, but it will also eventually move to the new format.

The WIN Network is not alone in transitioning to the new format. You will have noticed other free to air broadcasters also have channels in the new format and will also be moving more channels to the new format.

Timeline:

Will transition to Mpeg 4 format on the 28th November

Will Transition to mpeg4 format on the 21st November

Note: In Eastern South Australia and Griffith, all Seven Network channels and Network Ten Channels will also transition to the mpeg4 formats very soon.

In Tasmania all broadcasters have transitioned to mpeg 4 formats already.

Trouble Shooting

I receive no signal or audio only on ch 50, 51, 52 , 53.

Unfortunately, your TV is not modern enough to receive the mpeg4 signal and you will need to purchase a new tv or set top box.

I was receiving all channels but now I don’t receive any.

Your TV may have lost its Tuning, so you should try doing a rescan.

How much is a Set top Box.

They can retail at $50 - $100 at your local appliance store.  (ask for a “digital set top box” for my old TV)

How long will you keep ch5 in mpeg2?

We are yet to set a firm date, but we anticipate before the end of next calendar year.

Why can’t you just leave it how it has always been Why do you need to change?

Technology has moved on just as your tv went from Black and White to colour or 4:3 to 16:9 we need to keep up with the technology so we can continue to give you access to the best quality at no cost other than your initial purchase. We have been delivering the new format for nearly 10 years so it is time to make the full transition.
